Cleft Lip
Discharge Instructions
GENERAL
DO NOT USE A PACIFIER FOR THREE WEEKS
Arm restraints (supplied by the hospital) will be necessary for
three weeks following surgery. It is very important that the child
keeps fingers and toys away from the mouth.
DIET
Continue feeding your infant with the usual method you were using
before surgery.
WOUND CARE
The upper part of the lip may be closed with dermabond. This is
similar to super glue and gradually peels off in 10-14 days. It
is common to get a little dirty from food etc.
You can clean the lower part of the lip with a solution of peroxide
and saline using a Q-tip. Then apply Bacitracin ointment. Do this
until the sutures dissolve (approx. 3-5 days).
PAIN MANAGEMENT
You may be given a prescription for an antibiotic and possibly pain
medication when discharged.
